Characterizing the patient journey for an inpatient initiated antibiotic

Challenge

A biotechnology company launching an IV antibiotic wanted to track commercial uptake and differences in patient characteristics for those who received their drug vs. other treatments.

Approach

  • Defined the attributes of the patient population to track, including care setting, prior admissions and ICD-10 diagnoses, and comorbidities
  • Extracted EMR data from an EMR aggregator using the defined criteria
  • Constructed dashboards and analytics using these data, which updated weekly to provide timely launch tracking of the product

Results

  • Client used these analyses to define the care setting focus for their market access strategy
  • Our analysis enabled the HEOR team to design and execute studies soon after launch
